Opinion | Why Democrats Need to End the Government Shutdown Now

The Government Shutdown is continuing to drag on, and there is no end in sight at this point. Senate Democrats refuse to pass a bipartisan continuing resolution that would reopen the government for a specific period, and they are doing so because they believe they have "leverage." At least that is how Katherine Clark is portraying it, stating, "Of course, there will be families that are going to suffer, but it is one of the few leverage times we have." This is a slap in the face to every single American who relies on government subsidies. Tomorrow, SNAP subsidies will be cut off for millions of Americans, and Democrats are the ones to blame. However, Chuck Schumer is continuing to blame Republicans for defunding SNAP, crying on the Senate floor almost every day for the last month now. Schumer clearly does not recognize American people are starting to blame Democrats for this shutdown, and blaming Republicans is not working.

CNN conducted a poll this week on the Republican Party's approval rating and the Democrat party approval rating. The Republican Party's approval rating since the shutdown has gone up, while the Democratic Party's approval rating since the shutdown has gone down. However, Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries still believe blaming Republicans for everything is the best strategy at this moment. This may be because the Democrats have no other strategy right now, because their policies of open borders, healthcare for illegal aliens, and many others do not work for the American people. Schumer and Jeffries are being held captive by the radical wing of their party, and they are refusing to fight out of it, which is leading to the decline in approval ratings of the Democratic Party.

People could say it is time for new leadership in the Democratic Party, but this will get them absolutely nowhere. This is because the top names in the Democratic party consist of people like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jasmine Crockett, who are two of the dumbest people I have ever seen in US politics. However, the longer this shutdown drags on, people may start calling for new leadership within the party, which will have negative long-term effects for the party as a whole. Independents will not vote for Democrats if either of those two is the leader of the party because they have some of the dumbest policies known to man, and they choose to engage in political theater more rather than helping the American people.

I expect the Democratic Party's approval rating to fall even further the longer this shutdown lasts. This could impact how people vote in the midterms, and it could even extend all the way to 2028. If Democrats were smart, they would vote to open the government now, then negotiate extending the ACA subsidies they want so badly. Will the Democrats do it? Probably not. The party is run by incompetent people, and they cannot wrap their heads around the fact that this will fuck them over in the midterms. We will see how this plays out, but it is getting worse for Democrats by the day.
